Is TMS the best treatment option?

TMS is an effective treatment when medications have not been effective or when side effects are intolerable. Unlike medications, TMS does not cause undesired systemic side effects and can offer long-term remission from symptoms.

Does insurance cover my TMS therapy?

FDA-approved TMS Therapy Systems are covered by most health plans, including Medicare and Tricare. Most insurance networks cover TMS therapy for the treatment of depression. Many insurances will cover TMS for the treatment of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). TMS device manufacturers are working with insurance networks for coverage of other FDA-approved conditions.

Is TMS therapy safe and easy to tolerate?

TMS is free from side effects often associated with antidepressant medications. The most common side effects include temporary discomfort at or near the treatment site and headache. These symptoms typically resolve after the first few treatment sessions.

Is TMS covered by most commercial and government insurance plans?

TMS is covered by most insurance plans for the treatment of major depressive disorder when medications and therapy have been ineffective. Some insurances are beginning to cover TMS for other conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but it is recommended to always check with your specific plan prior to starting TMS treatment. A prior authorization is often required, which is generally obtained by your TMS clinic provider.

What about your out-of-pocket cost for TMS therapy treatment?

Your out-of-pocket will depend on your insurance deductible, visit copay and/or coinsurance under your mental health plan. It is important to determine how much of your deductible and maximum out-of-pocket has been met with your plan prior to starting TMS treatment. You may be responsible for the remainder of your deductible and any copay or coinsurance that is applicable until your maximum annual out-of-pocket is met.

When is TMS therapy not typically covered by your insurance?

TMS therapy is typically not covered by insurance when receiving treatment for conditions that are not yet FDA-approved. TMS treatment may not be covered by insurance for patients with the following active conditions and/or disorders: bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use disorder, eating disorder, seizure disorder, dementia, and various other neurological conditions. You should always check with your insurance regarding coverage if you are pregnant or nursing.

If your TMS doctor offers accelerated treatment protocols (theta burst), you should check with your insurance plan to be sure the treatment protocol is covered.

You should not receive TMS therapy treatment if you have magnetic-sensitive metal in or around your head.
